During Laus Polyphoniae, 16th century motet images – engravings of scenes from the Bible that also incorporate polyphonic scores – from the Print Cabinet of Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp will be premièred at an exclusive concert. In addition, the motet images will be reflected in a contemporary visual and musical response by the composer-video artist Benjamien Lycke.
The motet images are unique Flemish masterpieces that combine two particular elements: music and the art of printing. Museum Plantin-Moretus and Museum Vleeshuis focus on these two disciplines. AMUZ is working with the two museums to support the Miroirs project with research and interpretation. Museum Plantin-Moretus also offers the exceptional opportunity to view the motet images during the festival.
Utopia is a group of five singers with many years of experience in internationally renowned ensembles such as Huelgas Ensemble, Capilla Flamenca, Vox Luminis, Collegium Vocale, Cappella Mariana and Ensemble Correspondances. The ensemble specialises in 16th century Flemish vocal polyphony. Rather than aiming for exuberant performances, it seeks a pure style of singing that renders the polyphonic fabric with unprecedented transparency. “The results are beautiful, intimate and thoroughly engaging” (Gramophone, UK), is just one example of the lavish international praise it has received.
